Investigators operating a human specimen repository are responsible for protecting repository personnel who work with human tissues against accidental exposure to infectious agents. Investigators must train all personnel in the safe handling and transport of potentially biohazardous human tissues. Investigators must also ensure that their facilities are appropriate for safe handling of human tissues.

The Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN) has prepared the following guideline for handling human tissues and body fluids used in research:
